Skin Fade
A popular men's hairstyle characterized by a gradual transition from very short hair at the sides and back to longer hair on top. The shortest part of the fade often blends seamlessly into the skin, hence the name.
Skin fades can be tailored by barbers to various hair lengths on top, from short to long. This allows for a wide range of styles.
While they require regular trims to maintain the desired fade line, skin fades are relatively low-maintenance compared to some other hairstyles.
The longer hair on top can be styled in countless ways, including slicked back, side-parted or textured.
Skin fades work well with different hair types and facial shapes, making them a popular choice for men of all ages.
There are different types of fades, such as the high fade, mid fade, and low fade, each with its own distinct look.
Mullet
The mullet hairstyle is characterized by short hair at the sides, transitioning to longer hair at the back. A modern mullet often incorporates elements of other hairstyles, such as fades. This contrast creates a striking visual effect, often referred to as a "business in the front, party in the back" style. It has a long history, dating back to ancient cultures. It experienced a surge in popularity in modern times. The mullet has remained a very recognizable hairstyle.
Short sides: The hair is typically cut very short or even shaved at the sides of the head. Long back: The hair at the back of the head is significantly longer, often extending to the shoulder or even well below the shoulders. Shape: The transition between the short front and sides and the long back can be gradual or sharp, depending on the desired style. The mullet can be adapted to suit various hair textures and lengths, making it a versatile hairstyle option. It can be styled in different ways.
Pompadour
The Pompadour timeless and iconic hairstyle characterized by its voluminous, upward-swept front section. This dramatic styling creates a striking silhouette, often paired with a tapered back and sides.
Key Elements of the Pompadour: Volume: The most defining feature is the voluminous front section, which is typically styled upwards and away from the face. Taper: The sides and back are usually tapered creating a sharp contrast with the voluminous front. Styling Tips: Use a strong-hold hair gel or pomade to achieve the desired volume and hold. Blow Dryer: Blow dry the hair upwards and backwards to create lift and volume. Combing: Use a comb to shape the front section and create the desired style. Finishing Touches: Add a light amount of hairspray to help the style hold throughout the day.
Modern Pompadour: A more contemporary version often features less dramatic, shorter front section with the front a slightly shorter back and sides. Textured Pompadour: This style incorporates a textured look with slightly tousled or wavy hair.

Other Common Haircut Terms Used by Barbers
French Crop: A classic short haircut with a scissor-cut top and clipper-cut sides. The fringe is typically cut short, straight across and high up the forehead.
Two-block haircut and Undercut are very similar. Typically with a longer top and shorter sides but the transition is usually very sharp instead of gradual like with in most haircuts.
Choppy Cut: Achieved by point cutting, this technique involves cutting the hair at various lengths with the scissors held almost parallel to the hair. This creates texture and removes bulk from the ends.
Club Cut: A blunt cut that's ideal when texture isn't desired. The hair is cut straight across, leaving the ends even.
Hard Side Parting: Created by shaving a defined parting with a trimmer or clipper blade.
Edging: The process of trimming clear edges around the neckline, ears, sideburns, temples, and sometimes the forehead using the corner of a hair trimmer.
Clipper Over Comb/Scissor Over Comb: Techniques used to create a short cut with a softer finish. Clipper guard attachments can be used for a more uniform look.
Disconnected Haircut: A style where different sections of hair are cut at varying lengths without blending. Modern undercuts often feature this disconnected look, unlike the faded undercuts.
